We are gearing up for the cold winter season and along with this is greater risk for fire danger in your home. It is important to take steps to insure the safety of your family and prevent loss of property due to fire damage. The average number of residential fires each year in the U.S. is 374,000 . ?Here are some tips to help protect your home and prevent a fire from happening.

 

Heating?

  • Never leave a fire unattended
  • Wood stoves should be UL approved
  • Have a professional inspect and clean your chimney, stovepipe and/or furnace annually
  • Keep a metal or glass screen in front of your fireplace opening
  • Never leave space heaters unattended and turn them off when leaving the home
  • Check furnace control and emergency shut-offs to make sure they are working properly
  • Never use devices designed for outdoor use in your home
  • Kerosene heaters are prohibited inside all California homes (Sec. 19881, Health and Safety Code)

Cooking?

  • Clean the exhaust hood and duct over the stove regularly
  • Wipe up spilled grease as soon as the surface of the stove is cool
  • Do not store items on the stovetop
  • Keep kitchen appliances clean and in good condition
  • Always have a fire extinguisher near the kitchen
  • Follow instructions carefully when using microwave ovens

Candles?

  • Do not leave candles unattended
  • Do not place candles near flammable materials
  • Extinguish candles before you leave the home or go to bed
  • Do not let a candle burn all the way down ? put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container
  • Consider using flameless candles

?Holiday Decorations?

  • Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant
  • Keep decorations away from heat sources, windows and doors
  • Be sure to use indoor lights inside and outdoor lights outside
  • Make sure that all electrical cords have no frayed or cracked wires or broken sockets
  • Do not leave lights on for prolonged periods or unattended
  • Do not overload electrical outlets
  • Keep your live Christmas tree in water & recut the trunk

Smoke Alarms?

  • Put an alarm in every bedroom
  • Use both an ionization smoke detector and a photoelectric smoke detector in your home
  • Do a monthly test of your smoke alarms
  • Be sure the alarm has the label of a recognized testing laboratory
  • Replace batteries in an alarm at least once a year
